Ignorance Is Bliss: MAiD Is Not for Everybody

By Bill Vassilopoulos

Many Canadians are starting to feel a deep sense of worry regarding the impending expansion of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) to individuals suffering solely from mental health challenges and psychiatric disorders. But the unvarnished truth is that the system is already bleeding into these vulnerable spaces.

In December 2025, a tragic case unfolded in British Columbia where MAiD was performed on a 26-year-old man inside a funeral home. His primary qualifying conditions? Type 2 diabetes and seasonal bouts of depression. This young man had a documented history of mental health struggles but also possessed a deep, loving support network from his parents. Today, his devastated family is actively pursuing accountability and exploring legal action against the secondary medical assessor who cleared their son for terminal intervention.

What the general public remains largely unaware of is the sheer velocity at which MAiD is occurring across Canada—and the exact clinical mechanics of what is being administered behind closed doors. As the old saying goes, ignorance is bliss.

The Mechanics of the Exit

Have you ever stopped to investigate the exact sequence of the lethal chemical cocktail used in these procedures? A powerful paralytic is administered first, followed by a deep sedative, before blood circulation is ultimately stopped entirely.

From a clinical standpoint, this sequence ensures the body remains completely still, masking the physical trauma of cardiac arrest. It raises a haunting philosophical and medical question: where is the line between being declared "brain dead" and being biologically dead? In the medical industry, the window of brain death is precisely what allows for viable organ harvesting. Organs cannot be harvested from a cold, fully deceased cadaver; they must be extracted while biological functions are artificially sustained.

This mechanical reality creates a highly disturbing environment in our healthcare system. Stories are emerging from the front lines of the profound psychological toll this takes on staff. I recently read an account from an operating room assistant who, having never assisted with an organ extraction before, mistakenly walked into a theater where a 20-year-old’s organs had just been harvested. The raw sight of the physical wreckage—and the overwhelming trauma of the moment—was so intense that senior staff immediately escorted her out, warning her never to speak of what she had witnessed.

When a healthcare system begins to actively suggest MAiD to vulnerable patients who never requested it, while simultaneously tracking the utility of their organs for transplantation, the line between medical charity and systemic coercion completely evaporates.

The Expansion to the Next Generation

If we do not demand a halt to this trajectory, the boundaries will dissolve entirely. The policy pipeline suggests that we are moving toward an era where teenagers struggling with eating disorders, children over the age of 12 navigating profound distress without mandatory parental consent, and young people diagnosed with autism, anxiety, or depression will be funneled toward this apparatus.

Canada already leads the industrialized world in the number of MAiD deaths per capita. This is an administrative statistic of abandonment, not a badge of honor.

A Shield for the Vulnerable

To counter this momentum, I have designed a specialized medical directive card intended to legally protect and preserve human life in the event of an unexpected hospitalization. While I am actively working to secure political backing to cement this specific card into legislative protection, you can take immediate action to defend yourself and your loved ones. I highly encourage you to utilize the Do Not Euthanize (DNE) resources provided by the Delta Hospice Society, which are specifically engineered to help citizens legally declare their right to live.

Ultimately, your value as a human being is not an audit of your physical health, your mental clarity, or your organ utility. Your worth is absolute, inherent, and permanent.

If you are carrying a heavy burden today, reject the cultural push toward an early exit and remember these truths:

  • You are irreplaceable.

  • You are unrepeatable.

  • You are highly valued.

  • You are NOT a burden. (Matthew 11:28-29)
