3RT Newsletter

Newsletter Subject: The village is drowning in silence. Let’s change that.

Real. Raw. Respectful. Welcome to 3RT.

We are told that when it comes to suicide and mental health, the "system" will handle it. We are told to wait for the experts, the policies, and the waiting lists.

I am here to tell you that we cannot afford to wait.

My name is Bill Vassilopoulos. For the last nine years—since 2017—I have been gathering stories. I have sat with grieving families, heard the testimonies of those who survived, and carried the weight of the stories of those who didn't. When I finished my last interview in October 2020, right after I lost my father, I thought the mission was done.

But life had other plans. In December 2022, during the isolation of the pandemic, I faced a health crisis at home that brought me to my own threshold. I realized then that my survival wasn't just a matter of luck—it was a mandate. I had to finish the work.

The result is Eyes Above the Water, and the mission is the 3RT movement.

Why 3RT?

Because the most dangerous myth we face is that talking about suicide "plants the seed" for someone to act.

The truth is the opposite. The seed is planted by the silence. It is planted by the isolation that happens when we are too afraid of saying the "wrong thing" that we end up saying nothing at all.

3RT is about replacing that bystander anxiety with the readiness of a Community Lifeguard.

What’s Next?

This month, I am heading into a strategic collaboration meeting with LivingWorks. I am not going there as an author looking for praise. I am going there as an organizer representing you—the village. I am going to advocate for a shift in how we handle human safety:

  • Moving away from "passive waiting."

  • Moving toward "active, peer-to-peer intervention."

  • Treating vulnerability not as a liability, but as the human condition.

How you can join the Lifeguard Movement:

  1. Read the Truth: If you haven’t yet, pick up Eyes Above the Water. It isn't a policy manual; it’s a manual for the village.

  2. Speak Up: The next time you feel that gut instinct that someone is struggling, don’t walk away. Reach out. Be the lifeguard who refuses to let them drown in the dark.

  3. Stay Connected: I’ll be sharing updates from my work with LivingWorks and new ways to get trained as a Community Lifeguard in this newsletter every month.

The heavy lifting of human safety doesn't belong to the system. It belongs to us.

Be the lifeguard who reaches out.

Subject: We need to talk about the village I Bill Vassilopoulos I June 5, 2026

Dear Friends,

For nine years, I have been listening to the stories of our village. I’ve looked at the data, but more importantly, I’ve looked at the people—people who are desperate to be noticed, people who have stories they are waiting to tell, and people who, at their core, want to live more than they want to exit.

The silence that surrounds these conversations is not a shield; it is a weight. It is time we lifted it together.

I am officially launching my Speaking & Advocacy page today. My mission is simple: to help our communities learn how to see and hear one another, and to bridge the gap between that awareness and the life-saving tools provided by the gold-standard training at LivingWorks.

I don’t want to be a lecturer; I want to be a facilitator. If you lead a congregation, a community group, or a team that needs to learn how to be a witness in the dark, I am ready to come to you.

I don’t charge a speaking fee for these sessions. I only ask for travel support and the opportunity to share this mission through a community offering. Let’s make sure no one in our village has to tell their story alone.

Warmly Your friend,

Bill Vassilopoulos
