Supporting Someone Else: A Lifeguard’s Guide
You do not need to be an expert to make a difference. You only need to be a bridge.
If you are concerned about a friend or family member, use these steps:
Ask Directly: Use the word "suicide." It is the most important word in the room. "I’ve noticed you haven’t seemed like yourself lately, and I’m concerned. Are you thinking about suicide?"
Listen Without Judgment: Let them speak. You do not need to "fix" the problem; you need to be the person who listens.
Bridge to Safety: Do not leave them alone. "I am not a professional, but I want to make sure you have the support you need. Can we call 988 together right now?"
Note on Emergency Services: People often worry that calling for help will lead to unnecessary escalation. Always err on the side of caution. It is better to have an unnecessary conversation with a professional than to lose someone you love.
Disclaimer: These guidelines are based on international suicide intervention best practices. They are designed to help you bridge the gap to professional care and are not a substitute for clinical intervention.
