Canada now allows Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) patients to offer their organs before they are completely dead.
Within seven minutes of receiving their first lethal injection, a patient can be declared "brain dead" and quickly wheeled off to a surgical room where doctors and nurses begin removing their organs for transplant—but not necessarily for Canadians.
We know this because a 59-year-old American man with heart failure received a heart transplant from a Canadian MAiD patient across the border within minutes. This is now a national issue.
How did an American man get access to this heart? Organs are supposed to be allocated to a waitlist in Ontario first and afterwards be offered to the wider Canadian system before being made available to the United States. It is highly unlikely that there was no Canadian on a waitlist for a heart transplant. It is very strange and statistically improbable that this MAiD recipient offered their heart and an American was waiting for this particular heart. According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), there were 119 patients on a waitlist for a heart transplant. As a Canadian, I am very curious how an American bypassed all these patients and skipped the line. Am I wrong? Hearts are extremely scarce and people are waiting years to get one, but then this happens and there are crickets from the Canadian mainstream media.
Now think about this: not one Canadian needed a heart transplant when this event happened? Think about the coordination this surgery needed between the two countries. The MAiD patient in Canada was told, "We have a patient who needs your heart right now and we need to get you ready," and in the USA, the 59-year-old man was told to come to the hospital because "we have a heart waiting for you." Now, how did the MAiD patient's family agree to all of this? Did the MAiD patient have advocacy, or did they make this quick decision on their own? There are a lot of unknown answers. As soon as the MAiD patient was injected, a team of hospital staff declared the MAiD patient brain dead within seven minutes, and off they went to another room. They carve the patient up, and in six hours they deliver the heart to a patient in Pennsylvania. Now, this is reason for serious alarm—that you declare a patient dead when they are still alive for obvious reasons, because it is medically impossible to harvest organs from any cadaver.

Canada is the leader in offering organs around the world. The current government has indicated that MAiD and organ donation could save Canadians significant funding across its medical system if they continue on this route.
I don't know about you, but my name is off that donor list, and you need to check with your province or state to see if you are automatically signed up without your consent.
Folks, we are living in a world where our lives are only valuable as long as we can offer utility to, and not liability to, our medical system.
I am deeply concerned about whether families are properly informed and aware of what is happening in these MAiD hospital rooms, why their loved one appears to be at peace with the first injection of three to come, and why they are quickly declared brain dead and wheeled out to a different room within seven minutes.
