MAiD Killed the Hippocratic Oath: A Vision Becomes Reality
By Bill Vassilopoulos
In just ten years, the vision for Canada has undergone a radical transformation: cannabis is legal, and state-sanctioned euthanasia is now actively reducing our population. Although many physicians initially attempted to opt out of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) on the grounds of religious or moral conscience, those protections have largely been eroded. In many institutions, the burden has simply shifted, with physicians instructing nurses to administer the lethal injections in their stead.
For thousands of years, the medical profession was anchored by the Hippocratic Oath—a promise to protect, to heal, and to preserve. Today, that oath has been largely abandoned. MAiD has fundamentally eroded the concept of informed consent and granted the medical establishment broad, unchecked authority over life-and-death decisions.
Hospitals—including many privately operated hospice centers—are now required to offer MAiD to patients perceived to be experiencing mental health distress. We are witnessing a grim new reality: social workers roaming hospital hallways in search of potential MAiD candidates, often targeting late-stage dementia patients who have no family present to advocate for their survival. Even more disturbing is the government’s active movement to integrate organ donation protocols prior to death.
The Statistical Shift
When I served as a Suicide First Aid Trainer, the data from 2006 showed approximately 3,600 reported suicides per year in Canada—roughly 10 to 11 per day. In 2016, the year MAiD was legalized, there were 1,018 recorded deaths. By 2024, that number skyrocketed to 16,500.
These deaths are not classified as suicides, and a growing number of recipients were not terminally ill. The financial calculus is cold: the government now projects savings of $1.27 trillion over the next 20 years through the intersection of MAiD and organ recovery. This is a shocking milestone—and it is certainly nothing to be proud of.
The Reality of Coercion: Kelsi Sheren’s Story
The human cost of this system is best illustrated by the testimony of those who have survived it. Military veteran Kelsi Sheren, who served in Afghanistan and returned home grappling with PTSD, was offered MAiD as a "solution" to her mental suffering.
To hear her powerful testimony on how the system profits from this practice, I strongly encourage you to watch her interview with Julian Michaels: LEGAL EUTHANASIA: The System Is Profiting from MAiD. Please fast forward to the 33:30 mark to go directly to her discussion on MAiD. In 2027, Canada will again consider expanding MAiD eligibility to include individuals with mental health challenges—a move that must be challenged by every citizen.
Refusing the Distraction
While Canadians are distracted by political drama, economic turmoil, and manufactured culture wars, our neighbors are dying unnecessarily. Not a single major political party is willing to address the scale of this moral collapse.
What happened to the medical professionals who entered the field to do no harm? What happened to the promise that MAiD would be reserved only for competent adults with terminal illnesses? We have become a society that severs relationships over trivialities—political affiliations, medical choices, even minor disagreements—yet we remain silent while the state disposes of our most vulnerable. I refuse to write people off simply because we disagree.
I have completed my book, Eyes Above the Water, which contains real, raw conversations about suicide and the value of every life. It is dedicated to the frontline workers, the grieving families, and the courageous individuals who chose to share their stories. Together, we are making a difference.
Keep looking up.
