Climate Change Anxiety: A Doomsday Scenario?
By Bill Vassilopoulos
In a world that seems intent on labeling every behavior, emotion, and thought as a disease or disorder, we are now confronted with "Climate Change Anxiety." With the media relentlessly preaching a doomsday scenario, it is little wonder that many of our young people see no bright future ahead.
In his 2006 documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore presented dire scenarios of environmental and societal collapse. Today, much of the discourse surrounding these predictions has intensified, yet the focus remains curiously narrow. We see environmental advocates—including figures like Greta Thunberg—delivering impassioned speeches at the United Nations, demanding accountability while painting a picture of mass extinction. Simultaneously, we hear figures like Bill Gates discussing population reduction strategies in the context of health and vaccines.
When you combine these messages—a world on the brink of environmental collapse and high-profile figures advocating for population control—it is no wonder our youth are feeling the weight of the world on their shoulders. They are being told their future is being stolen. Would you want to stick around for that?
What Is Climate Change Anxiety?
According to the Handbook of Climate Psychology, climate anxiety is defined as "heightened emotional, mental, or somatic distress in response to dangerous changes in the climate system." It is often suggested that feeling this distress is a "healthier" response than denial. However, for many, this "healthier" response manifests as panic attacks, loss of appetite, irritability, and profound sleeplessness.
Psychological professionals are now faced with a strange dilemma: are patients feeling too much anxiety, or are they being conditioned to feel exactly as the narrative dictates? This anxiety is felt most acutely among the young, who are bombarded with information that presents their existence as a precursor to catastrophe.
The Cost of Fear
We saw suicide rates among teenagers skyrocket during the lockdowns and restrictions from 2020 to 2022. While reporting discrepancies exist between official bodies like the CDC and the observations of funeral directors on the ground, the trend is undeniable: mental health disorders and feelings of hopelessness rose significantly during and post-COVID. The combination of isolation and the relentless, fear-based narrative that the world is coming to an end has weighed heavily on our young population.
We live in a world that increasingly lacks hope. Messages of impending climate doom are draining the vitality from our youth, providing them with a forecast that looks bleak, dismal, and entirely final.
Finding a Sound Mind
Thankfully, the Bible provides clarity regarding what "anxiety" actually is. It is not merely an emotion, but a spirit of fear—something we are not called to harbor. As stated in 2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV):
"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."
We combat this spirit of anxiety by remembering the instructions given to the Philippians (Philippians 4:4-9, KJV), which teach us to replace worry with prayer, thanksgiving, and a focus on things that are true, honest, and lovely.
Finally, we hold onto the ultimate hope found in John 3:16 (KJV):
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
There is a way forward. You are not a statistic, and you are not a burden to a planet in crisis.
You are irreplaceable.
You are unrepeatable.
You are highly valued.
You are NOT a burden.
Keep looking up, my friends.
Warmly, your friend,
